Kevin Lewis

Kevin is the managing director of Inhouse Legal Solutions. He is the lecturer for the course Compliance: Theory and Practice in the Financial Services Industry, which we teach as part of the Sydney University Law School postgraduate program. He is also the author of our Inhouse Updates newsletter service and is primarily responsible for the provision of our advisory and consulting services.

With a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and a Bachelor of Laws, both with First Class Honours, from the University of Western Australia, a Doctorate of Juridical Science from Harvard University and a Master of Business Administration from the Graduate School of Management and Public Policy of the University of Sydney, Kevin is one of the most highly credentialed lawyers in Australia. He was the recipient of the Graduate Management Association Prize (shared) (best student, MBA course, Sydney); J.A. Wood Memorial Prize (most outstanding graduand in the faculties of architecture, arts, economics and commerce, education and law, UWA); H.C.F. Keall Prize (best student, fourth year law, UWA); John Norman Barker Prize (best student, third year law, UWA) and Convocation Prize (best student, first year law, UWA), as well as a number of other prizes and scholarships.

Kevin's combined experience in private practice and inhouse legal roles is unique amongst Australian legal practitioners.

Kevin was a partner from 1987 to 1997 with the major Australian commercial law firm Freehills, where he specialised in mergers and acquisitions. He held a number of senior management positions with the firm, including section business manager of the M&A group in both the Sydney and Melbourne offices and managing partner of the London office from 1994-96.

Kevin was a partner from mid 2003 to early 2005 with Atanaskovic Hartnell, where he specialised in general corporate law and financial services regulation. He was also the managing partner of that firm for a period.

Kevin is now a partner with the M&A boutique law firm Chang Pistilli & Simmons, where he continues to specialise in mergers and acquisitions and financial services regulation.

In between these partnership roles, Kevin was the first full-time general counsel of the Bankers Trust Australia group, until the division and sale of that group's businesses to the Principal Insurance Group and Macquarie Bank in 1999, which he oversaw. Subsequently, he held senior legal roles with Goldman Sachs Australia and Macquarie Bank, giving him the unique perspective of having worked in top legal positions in 3 high quality but very different financial services organisations. He also developed and ran a novel legal services business for the Commonwealth Bank called eCommLegal from 2005 until 2008.

Kevin was made an adjunct professor of the Sydney University Law School in 2008.
